International Brigade Memorial Sign Mounted Print

Between 1936 and 1939, more than 2,100 British volunteers travelled to Spain to fight for the Republican cause against Franco’s fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Of these 534 died, including 65 from Glasgow. These volunteers, part of the International Brigade, are remembered by a statue erected on Clyde Street in Glasgow in 1979. Created by Arthur Dooley, it features a statue of Dolores Ibarruri, known as La Pasionaria (the Passionflower), an activist known for her passionate speeches. This sign is a homage to this memorial, and to the members of the International Brigade. The quote below this sign comes from Ibarruri and is featured on the memorial below her statue.
