International Brigade Memorial Nae Pasaran Sign Mounted Print

Between 1936 and 1939, more than 2,100 British volunteers travelled to Spain to fight for the Republican cause against Franco’s fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Of these 534 died, including 65 from Glasgow. These volunteers, part of the International Brigade, are remembered by a statue erected on Clyde Street in Glasgow in 1979. Created by Arthur Dooley, it features a statue of Dolores Ibarruri, known as La Pasionaria (the Passionflower), an activist known for her passionate speeches. This sign is a homage to this memorial, and of the members of the International Brigade. This version features the warning Nae Pasaran (a play on the anti-fascist slogan meaning they shall not pass) which was the title of a 2018 film about a group of Scottish workers who managed to ground half the Chilean airforce in the 1980s by refusing to work on the engines of planes in their factory in East Kilbride being used by the forces of General Pinochet to massacre civilians

The print itself is 7.25 inches by 9 inches (18.5 cm by 23cm), and it comes mounted in a white 1.5 inch (3.5 cm) mount with a total size of 10 inches by 12 inches (25.5 cm by 30.5cm). This print is signed by A Sign of Humour.
